MTEOR 4350: Radar Applications in Meteorology

Introduction to remote sensing from a meteorological perspective, with emphasis on weather radar. Topics presented include fundamental principles of remote sensing, Doppler velocity, polarimetric techniques, and measurement error and uncertainty. In-class lab exercises develop skill in scientific interpretation of radar imagery for a variety of weather phenomena, from stratiform precipitation to convective storms and severe weather. Student-led case studies are used to practice effective communication of radar observations for scientific and public audiences. (Typically Offered: Spring).
